Relaxed Performance

A Magical Evening awaits – Leas Cliff Hall’s Relaxed Performance of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Pantomime

There’s something truly enchanting about the world of Oz. Whether it’s the glittering Emerald City, the Lion’s courage, the Tin Man’s heartwarming journey, or Dorothy’s timeless quest to find her way home, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz continues to captivate audiences of all ages. This year, our production takes on an even more special dimension with our relaxed performance, designed to welcome everyone to the magic of theatre and live entertainment.

what is a Relaxed Performance?

For those unfamiliar with the concept, a relaxed performance is specifically tailored for individuals who might find traditional theatre/live entertainment settings challenging. This includes people with autism spectrum conditions, sensory and communication disorders, learning disabilities, and anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed environment. The goal is to create an inclusive, welcoming space where everyone can enjoy the show comfortably.

Preparing for the Magic

In preparation for our relaxed performance of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, we make several thoughtful adjustments:

Adjustments to the Environment:

Lighting and Sound – The house lights are dimmed rather than completely turned off, and loud or sudden noises are reduced. This helps minimise sensory overload and makes the environment more accommodating.
Bright lights and flashes are reduced.
Chill-Out Zones – We set up quiet areas where audience members can go if they need a break from the action.

Staff Training:

Our Front of House team understands the needs of our audience and is ready to assist if needed and ensure everyone has a positive experience.

Pre-Show Information:

Before the show begins, the actors will come out on stage to explain their characters and anything that might be a little scary.

Highlights of the Show:

Dorothy’s Adventure – Our beloved heroine, Dorothy, played by the talented Emily Day, will captivate the audience with her charm and determination.
The Colourful Characters – The Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion embody the true meaning of friendship and will provide plenty of laughter and joy. Their interactions will be slightly adjusted to be more predictable and gentler, ensuring everyone can enjoy their antics.
The Enchanting Set and Costumes – The vibrant sets and dazzling costumes transport everyone to the magical land of Oz. Our team works wonders to create an immersive experience without overwhelming the senses. The use of digital screens enhances the production and adds a modern twist to a traditional festive treat.
Interactive Elements – Audience participation is encouraged in a gentle and supportive manner. Simple call-and-response moments allow the audience to feel involved without pressure.

Feedback and Reflections:

The response to our relaxed performances in previous years has been overwhelmingly positive. Many attendees have shared how meaningful it was to experience live theatre in such an inclusive setting. Parents have expressed gratitude for a family-friendly environment where their children could be themselves without fear of judgment.

One parent commented, It’s the first time we’ve been able to attend a theatre performance as a family. Seeing my child’s face light up with joy was priceless.

Looking Ahead:

Our relaxed performance of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is not just a show; it’s a celebration of inclusion, community, and the magic of theatre. For more information please email [email protected] or call 01303 228 607.
